Southland – Sticky Fingers (John Cooper/Ben Sherman, NC-17) [13 Jul 2009|12:40pm]

This is an outtake from Son is on a Midnight Run Like DeNiro or as [info]serialkarma referred to it, "Anything to justify John and Ben filth is fine by me."

Southland
John Cooper/Ben Sherman
Rated NC-17 for filth. All filth. Nothing else.

Sticky Fingers

John's pretty sure even prostitutes don't do tricks like this. )

"Fornell said that he's here...." " To kill me? Yeah, I know, I just had coffee with him." [12 Jul 2009|05:00pm]

Blessed is the weekend! I've spent most of this one with season one of Buffy on in the background as I tackled long-ignored household projects, navigated family fail, and cooked until all of my mixing bowls were dirty, and believe me, I own a lot of mixing bowls. Right now, I am happily rejoicing at having an air-conditioned first floor, and contemplating what to make for dinner.

I have an NCIS-related confession to make: Last night was the first time I ever watched Twilight. Spoilers for the end of NCIS season two. )

I don't think SciFi (or SyFy, whatever that's supposed to mean) is doing the best job of marketing Warehouse 13. I'd seen at least a half-hours worth of teaser trailers and still wasn't really sure I cared to see what it was about. I finally watched it after a friend said her sister recommended it, and then, I watched it on Hulu. (Oh, Hulu, I thought TiVo was addicting.) And it was wonderful! You should absolutely watch Warehouse 13. It's not an X-Files carbon-copy (though if you liked the X-Files, there are definite familiar formulas at work.) It's written and created by Jane Espenson! They use steam-punk-like two-way video communication and brass typewriter keyboards attached to supercomputers. The writing us full of clever jokes and excellent comedic timing, and the two leads have excellent chemistry without it being necessarily chemistry. I've already watched the pilot twice and am looking forward to the second episode. It's a really solid premise, and the characters all seem built to become more interesting once we learn their secrets, not less, and it's wacky enough to keep from getting lost in any potential self-referencing mythology. So if, like me, you were bored to tears by the teasers of Artie firing a zap-ray gun and a narrator talking about saving the President, trust me, they picked the most uninteresting moments for the advertising. There's much better stuff inside.

I saw Bruno earlier tonight. And I really enjoyed it, and laughed all the way through. (Disclaimer: I also saw Borat in the theatre and own the DVD, along with both seasons of Da Ali G Show. I am one of Those People.)

A defence of That Scene. Spoilers, obvs. )

Major Fannish Events [10 Jul 2009|09:00pm]

thefourthvine
For various reasons, right now I'm thinking about Major Fannish Events I Wish I Could Have Seen. Now, when I say that, I don't mean the actual events, most of which are available on DVD or at least on some fourth-generation cell phone recording somewhere, but the fannish reaction to those events.

And since I can't discuss this at all without spoilers, I'm just going to say: spoilers in the post for Buffy, Star Trek: TOS, Stargate: SG-1, Star Wars. No spoilers in the post for anything that has aired in, say, the last five years.

ETA: Spoilers in the comments for everything. No, seriously: everything in the WORLD. Television! Movies! Books! Anime! Manga! Horror movies from the 1930s! The Fifth World War! The heat death of the universe! It's pretty awesome, but if you don't like spoilers, maybe the comments section isn't the place for you.

spoilers spoilers spoilers spoilers spoilers OMG spoilers )

[Poll] Perceived Kinkiness [10 Jul 2009|11:20am]

thefourthvine
I am having a crappy day, people. I come to you for entertainment and distraction.

So, the other day - or maybe it was the other week; I'm not exactly Speedy Jenny, here - [info]frostfire_17 said something that interested me. She said that she thinks Reboot Kirk would be kinkier than TOS Kirk.

My immediate reaction, of course, was to want to evaluate the Perceived Kinkiness (PK) of many characters on a set scale. This is a pressing and important issue in fandom, after all, and I think it's tragic that I can find no previous work on the subject in the literature. (Why is there no journal of Fandometrics? I know lots of people study fans, and, look, I love you guys and I find you interesting and all, but what I really want to read is studies on the characteristics of various OTP groups within a given fandom as compared to OTP groups within another fandom, and an ordering of perceived character intelligence plotted against six key traits one of which is total percentage of dialog, and data on the distribution of key adjectives associated with certain characters, and maybe how that relates to fannish migration over time. Plus, of course, PK.) Fortunately, we have this thing called polls, so I can at least cover the PK issue until such a time as Fandometrics starts publishing.

Obviously, answer this poll using your own personal definition of kinkiness. For bonus points (and a more distracted, and thus more happy, TFV), discuss what specific kinks you think a character is mostly likely to have in the comments.

On this scale, 0 is totally not at all kinky, and 5 is most kinky in all the land. Go! Rate! We will have our Fandometrics yet! (And now we do, thanks to [info]dramaturgca: [info]fandometrics!)

Cut for a big long list of characters with buttons to push. )

Man, if that's what Panic! are going to sound like post-Ryan and Jon, I am so fucking happy they split, because that clip is FUCKING AWESOME. Because let's not kid ourselves: P.O. sucked pretty hard when compared to Fever.

In other news: BREAKING NEWS: Stephen Harper is a moron. I bet you didn't see that one coming!

Still no goats [08 Jul 2009|09:36pm]

[ mood | pleased ]

The weather was so nice when I got home today that a few moments spent with the tomato plants turned into nearly two hours of pruning and weediing all of my plants. It was longer than I thought, but the sun was setting, the air was neither too hot nor cold, and it wasn't humid. It was relaxing, with the only breaks in the silence being when my neighbors passed by or when the nearby church chimed the hours.

I saw lots of worms. I'm guessing because of all the rain we've been having. I said hi and thanked them for all their hard work in the soil my plants are in. Also lots of ants, though thankfully we were pretty content to leave each other alone, much though me pulling out weeds near their homes understandably upset them.

Possibly the most fun was weeding around the vinca minor. I got it last year because there was a looooooong stretch of dirt right in front of my porch which needed something to keep it looking barren. The catch was that the dirt was shallow, in no way rich looking, and had a huge wooden fence right next to it which effectively blocked out most sunlight.

After doing research I found that the vinca minor was pretty much made for that spot, up to the point where I'm pretty sure that some of the entries mentioned that the ideal location for the plant was at my address.

Last year it didn't grow much, but this year it's been flowering and getting lush. It's slowly covering the space. But what was fun was watching it choke out the weeds. I felt like the vinca minor and I were working together, like it had hunted down the weeds and held them up for me to spot and I got to yank them out to help finish the job.

The best was when I got to the end. I hadn't bought enough last year to cover all the ground, so the end was where the dirt was thinnest and for the most part I let it be. Today as long as I was on a role I figured I may as well make a dent into the thick clump of weeds. As I started to pull, sure enough, I saw my creeping vines sneaking their way along the bottom of the dirt. I felt like a proud mama. A mama who was proud of her slowly murderous baby.

Now all I need to do is figure out if I want to call it Audrey or Dexter. 8)

[info]reflectedeve made gorgeous, amazing, spectacular, flail-worthy art for Gerard Way's (Vampire) Detective Agency : the greenhouse!

Go tell her how much you love it. I have had it open for days and I can't stop looking at it. The greenhouse! It's such an important place in the story and it makes me all wordless and wavy-handed just thinking about it.

I'm supposed to be preparing for a couple of meetings tomorrow (one being the first formal meeting of the 2009 orientation subcommittee, of which I was unilaterally and against my will appointed chair, what what (side note: hahaha); the other being with minor field supervisor #1), but instead I am watching Star Trek crackvids on youtube. My new favourite thing = the one set to If You Were Gay from Avenue Q, which made me laugh so hard that I cried, but then also made me sad because Nicky/Rod isn't canon (THOUGH IT SHOULD BE -- muppet OTP of my heart!) and it would be ultra sad if, like Rod with Nicky, Spock had to settle for a Kirk-alike rather than one of his very own.

...I am possibly really invested in Kirk/Spock. Whatever! Point is, watch the video; it is the funniest thing ever, no matter what your crazy shipping preferences.

It makes me mad that this is filtered through Zane Lowe*, but, SRSLY OMG EXCITEMENT for the new Muse album Y/Y?

"You know there is the three-part symphony, the Exogenesis thing they’ve already talked about that. That is without a doubt, the most ambitious and incredible thing I think that Matt has ever applied himself along with the band, and it’s been fully realised. ... Yes, there are massive riffs in there, there are qwerky pop songs in there, there’s all sorts in there it’s absolutely incredible."

want. now.

*Kiwi cultural cringe + his monotone staccato delivery + oh, basically, does anyone like him? Carl Barat should have punched him harder.
